Of course it's for your protection. If you lose your card, no one will be able to delete your checking account. Check with your bank tomorrow to find out the reason for rejection.
It's also a good idea to call the bank whenever you make a major purchase (and your balance is a major purchase) to let them know it's not a fraud.
